You do not have to wait until your eyesight becomes noticeably blurred before arranging an appointment.

Consider booking an eye examination if:

• Your vision has changed
• Your existing glasses no longer seem to work as well
• You are struggling to see clearly at distance
• Reading or close work has become more difficult
• You are experiencing regular headaches or eye strain
• Your eyes feel tired after using screens
• You are struggling more with driving, particularly at night
• You have noticed increased glare or halos around lights
• You find it harder to adjust between light and dark
• You have noticed new or persistent visual symptoms
• You have concerns about your eye health
• You have been advised to have regular monitoring
• You are simply due your routine eye examination

Sudden changes in vision may require urgent assessment rather than a routine eye examination. If you suddenly develop new flashes or floaters, a sudden increase in them, a dark curtain or shadow across your vision, or eye pain with changes in vision, seek urgent advice from an optometrist or NHS 111. Sudden loss of vision or sudden severe eye pain may require emergency medical attention. 

If possible, please bring:

• Your current glasses
• Any spare or reading glasses you regularly use
• Details of your current prescription if available
• A list of relevant medication
• Details of any eye drops you currently use
• Any relevant hospital or ophthalmology information
• EyeMed authorisation if attending through EyeMed

It is also helpful to tell your optometrist about any eye conditions that run in your family, particularly conditions such as glaucoma.

Don't worry if you don't have all of this information. We can still carry out your examination.

Once your examination is complete, your optometrist will explain the results and talk you through what happens next.

Depending on your findings, you may be advised that:

• Your eyesight and prescription remain stable
• Your glasses prescription has changed
• New glasses may improve your vision
• You would benefit from different lenses for particular visual tasks
• Your eye health should be monitored
• Additional testing would be useful
• Another specialist assessment may be appropriate
• Referral for further investigation is recommended

If your prescription has changed, you can also speak to our dispensing team about frames and lens options that suit your prescription, lifestyle and visual needs.

You are welcome to browse our eyewear after your appointment, but there is no obligation to purchase glasses simply because you have had your eyes tested with us.

For many people, routine eye examinations are recommended approximately every two years.

However, this is not the right interval for everybody.

Your optometrist may recommend that you are seen sooner depending on factors such as:

• Your age
• Your prescription
• Changes in your eyesight
• Your medical history
• Your family eye-health history
• Existing eye conditions
• Previous examination findings
• Your individual risk factors

The most appropriate recall period will therefore be discussed with you following your examination.

Yes. An eye examination does more than establish whether you need glasses.

It also gives your optometrist the opportunity to examine the health of your eyes and monitor changes that may not initially cause obvious symptoms.

 Our current private comprehensive eye examination fee is £45. 

Children under 16 are eligible for NHS-funded sight tests.

Young people aged 16, 17 or 18 may also qualify when they are in full-time education.

Yes. Please bring any glasses that you currently use, including distance, reading, computer or varifocal glasses where applicable.

Even if you feel that your current glasses are no longer working properly, they provide useful information during your appointment.

That is completely fine.

An eye examination is not only about changing your glasses prescription. If your prescription remains stable and your eye-health findings are satisfactory, your optometrist will simply advise you when your next examination should be.

Yes.

Your routine eye examination and your contact lens assessment look at different aspects of your eye care.

If you wear contact lenses, you may require both an up-to-date eye examination and a separate contact lens assessment or aftercare appointment.

If you are due a routine vision and eye-health check, book an Eye Examination.

If you have a particular concern such as persistent dry-eye symptoms, contact lenses, a DVLA request or visual difficulties when reading, another type of appointment may be more appropriate.
